Short of a Picnic is a book that delves into the minds of the mentally unstable. In the author's own words it is "an impolite book" and it "puts reality first and politeness nowhere". He explains in the foreword that he's dealt with his own bouts of instability and that none of the books he read at that time were helpful to him, so he decided to write his own. The stories are by turn heartbreaking, amusing, contemplative, and terrifying, and Eric Shapiro's poetic language stirs the heart. Fairly short, but completely riveting.
